Overview

Harbour uses quantitative screens in its investment process to rank investment opportunities. Harbour’s ESG score is included in all Harbour funds active quantitative screens. All other things being equal, a higher ESG score results in a better overall security ranking. Harbour is an active owner. Where conflicts arise with respect to company strategic direction, remuneration, or other material issues, Harbour will work with senior management, the Board of Directors, and other investors to find a satisfactory outcome for all stakeholders.

Description

As part of our active ownership process Harbour recognizes there are many factors that influence our analysis, and that environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations have grown in significance as potential value drivers.

We believe that ESG factors can be a useful barometer of the quality of a company; Companies who manage ESG issues well are generally more likely to create long term shareholder value, with a reduced risk profile, compared with those companies who do not. Consequently, Harbour has integrated ESG factors directly into portfolio analysis. ESG factors are assessed in conjunction with existing comprehensive financial analysis. Our primary ESG tool is our proprietary Corporate Behaviour Survey, which we augment with external ESG specialists and broker research.

Before consideration of companies in our integration approach, we have set a baseline standard of responsible behaviour based on business activity. Subsequently, the fund does not invest in companies that to our knowledge derive any revenue from:

• The manufacture of tobacco
• The manufacture or testing of nuclear explosive devices (NEDs)
• The manufacture or sale of cluster munitions
• The manufacture or sale of anti-personnel mines
• The manufacture or sale of recreational cannabis
• The production of pornography
• The manufacture or sale of civilian automatic and semi-automatic firearms, magazines or parts

Stewardship & Impact

In July 2019, we lifted our requirements of certified products which we are phasing in over 18 months.

We now require that issuers have organisation-wide commitments to responsible investing and they exercise their responsibilities as stewards of your money - through engaging with companies to improve sustainability performance and voting on shareholder resolutions where possible. All certified products now need to at least avoid significant harm and their issuers will annually report against any sustainability-based claims made by their products. This uplift in program standards is part of our passion for, and on-going commitment to, responsible and ethical investing.

Even though we're lifting the bar, we know your convictions to doing good with your money may be higher and so we have served up our member's certified products with a large dose of transparency and independent verification, so that you can draw your own conclusions from reliable information and choose investments that best suit your individual needs.

Certified product issuers are required to update this information as soon as possible on the Responsible Returns site, but there may be some extenuating circumstances impacting timeframes.

The certification program may also assess information provided for certification based on proposed future changes to a responsible investment process that is in-line with Responsible Investment Association Australasia’s (RIAA) Responsible Investment Certification Program criteria. In such instances, members are similarly required to update this information on Responsible Returns within an agreed future timeframe. Old document versions may be reflected on site until this process is finalised.
